Airlines can now offer more Apple TV content than ever on their IFE systems, thanks to a distribution partnership with Anuvu. The inflight content and connectivity company secured an exclusive worldwide deal to make the media available in flight.
Apple TV content was previously available on a few airlines. But managing that relationship is difficult for a content company not integrated with the aviation industry. By partnering with Anuvu Apple gains easier access to a much larger potential consumer base.
The deal covers the entire Apple TV catalog. Rather than just a few episodes of a couple series on board, Anuvu will be able to offer airlines full series content. In the near term the company is starting with a few key selections, but EVP Media & Content Estibaliz Asiain expects that selection to grow quickly as Anuvu learns what’s in demand. “We’ve started with a couple of series, and that is going to be increasing,” Asiain explains. “We’re really looking at the things that are more appropriate for the market including regional demand based on geographies.”
Access to all the content means access to all the regionalization options as well. Asiain shared, “The very interesting thing is that we have access to all of the languages, subtitles, and HD or 4k content. So the quality is very nice, and the content can be relevant to every airline and a global passenger base.”
Asiain also notes that the content comes from Apple fully digitized. And thanks to Anuvu’s automated processing and distribution solution that content can be delivered to aircraft, including all those language options, with minimal human intervention. This can include “live” releases timed with drops on the ground as new series are loaded into the system, assuming the airline hardware also supports that option.
The Apple TV content is the latest in a string of exclusive content deals for Anuvu. Over the past couple years the company also secured A24, Formula1 racing, Lego, and more. And Asiain expects that trend to continue. “Independent content is becoming much more relevant nowadays, so we have an obligation to the industry to deliver this.”
