Airlines have a new option when it comes to deploying the FlightPath3D moving map platform. Rather than hosting the product on the aircraft the entire experience can be delivered via an inflight internet link thanks to the launch of FlightPath3D Cloud. This approach increases the opportunities for airlines to deploy the service. It also allows airlines to extend their reach with travelers, beyond just the time spent on board.
FlightPath3D Cloud revolutionizes travel by offering instant deployment, accessible both inflight and through airline digital platforms like apps and websites. It extends the journey enriching every phase from pre-flight planning to post-flight exploration with features like live arrival gate and baggage updates, all delivered through our immersive, customizable interface. – Duncan Jackson, President of FlightPath3D
A cloud-only installation could benefit airlines adopting high-speed internet services, but doing so without an on-board server or other infrastructure. While it would take some cues for passengers to find a ground-based portal, especially with a wide-open connection (e.g. Starlink on Hawaiian Airlines or airBaltic), this approach enables airlines to deliver a richer inflight experience.
The cloud-based infrastructure also backs deployments using an on-board server, ensuring data is quickly and consistently distributed to all aircraft as updates are made. This is especially important for airlines running in a hybrid configuration.
FlightPath3D is also able to expose a broader collection of data for airlines able to take advantage of the live data link. The company’s partnership with FlightAware, announced last October, allows airlines to access flight details such as arrival gate and baggage claim information, displaying that information via the map. This same partnership also powers the company’s Control Tower deployment with United Airlines.
Extending the Travel Ribbon
Moving beyond the in-flight experience, FlightPath3D Cloud also enables additional use cases across the travel experience.
Digital touchpoints, such as the airline website or app, can now display the same data as a seat-back screen, including airline-specific branding and customization. Gate displays and other airport screens can render the same content passengers stream in flight. Swapping between airline-managed and personal devices or enabling a multi-screen experience can be handled via a QR code.
FlightPath3D already is working to drive additional value for airlines through its Destination Reels offering, for example. Airlines can now offer that same travel inspiration content on the ground, expanding opportunities for upsells and partner bookings. It can also integrate loyalty program data to surface personalized content, rewards, and exclusive offers via the map interface.
The moving map is a critical part of the inflight entertainment experience. It is also one that airlines and vendors have been working to monetize for a long, long time now. FlightPath3D appears to be a solid step forward on that front, though this is not the first time I’ve felt like the map was making that leap.
