Airlines looking to modify their 787 interiors finally have a third party option. Lufthansa Technik secured its Boeing-licensed Service Center (BLSC) certification for cabin modifications on 787 airplanes, allowing it to perform those tasks. Technik is the first provider to secure the BLSC certification for 787s.
This is a great endorsement from Boeing of Lufthansa Technik’s outstanding cabin modification services. Customers looking to modify the interior of their Dreamliner will be able to find the full range of services from us. As Boeing’s licensed Service Center for cabin modification of the 787, we are pleased to contribute our expertise in this area and to create additional capacity in the market as the world’s largest MRO provider.
– Harald Gloy, chief operating officer at Lufthansa Technik
“Through this novel collaboration, customers will benefit from Lufthansa Technik’s decades of MRO experience, and familiarity with the 787 platform,” added Doug Backhus, vice president of Boeing Cabins, Modifications and Maintenance.
That it took more than a decade after the Dreamliner entered service for Boeing to issue a BLSC certification for 787 modifications is almost hard to believe. But the industry desperately needs more capacity for such services; Ethiopian was among the airlines recently complaining that Boeing simply could not process its desired retrofits fast enough. Ethiopian is just one of many airlines looking at retrofits, with the initial delivery cabins starting to show their age.
That Lufthansa Technik is the first to secure the certification is less surprising. The company is a top-tier provider of such services, including custom engineering work on aircraft of all sizes and in all markets.
And Boeing will be well served by focusing more on its core aircraft manufacturing operations than the post-delivery modification market.
The two companies will continue to coordinate the preparations for the first LHT retrofit customer, with work expected to begin in 2025.
