Panasonic Avionics has a new partner to help it optimize inflight connectivity services to aircraft. The company will integrate network management technology from Kognitive in its IFC solutions, boosting in-flight connectivity performance and operational efficiency, ultimately delivering a better passenger experience.
This collaboration highlights the strength of our platform in multi-orbit satellite and terrestrial 5G connectivity, applicable across all industries.
– Anand Chari, CEO, Kognitive Networks
Speaking to the partnership, PAC’s VP Connectivity John Wade added, “[Kognitive’s] advanced solution will allow us to seamlessly integrate and manage various communication channels on our aircraft.”
Notably, however, this deal is not about balancing multiple links off the aircraft. At least not yet. Kognitive’s solution aims to improve the performance and reliability on the single active link. This includes access control, traffic shaping, application-based policies, proactive alerting, and other features.
It is, however, the same technology stack that could eventually support link aggregation and switching based on contention, capacity, and cost, among other factors, should multiple connections become available on board. As Kognitive CEO Anand Chari explains, “It future-proofs network management for PAC and airlines. Any new Internet link type becomes and plug-n-play.”
A number of companies have recently launched services in the network monitoring space for airlines. Getting to network management is the next step in that evolution, providing more real-time value rather than just reporting. This is a major step in that direction.
