Airlines bet big on transatlantic traffic each summer, hoping to cash in on vacation splurges. And those bets don’t always pay off. In 2024 several airlines reported softer than hoped revenue, particularly to Northern European destinations, as increased supply led to lower fares. For 2025 American Airlines is betting that Southern Europe will remain a hot market, with four of its five seasonal routes targeting the region.
Resuming service to Edinburgh and adding new routes to other popular destinations across the continent will offer customers convenient access from American’s industry-leading domestic network to all that Europe has to offer.
– Brian Znotins, American’s Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning
American will connect its hub in Chicago to Madrid for the first time in Summer 2025, with flights launching on 30 March. On 23 May Philadelphia will add two destinations, Edinburgh and Milan. The Edinburgh route returns to American’s route map for the first time since 2019.

On 5 June American will connect Charlotte to Athens, one of four daily flights to the Greek capital for the carrier during the peak season. On 5 July American will also add service between Miami and Rome, its sixth US gateway to the Italian capital.
In addition to the new routes, American will also extend the season for a handful of other markets. Flights from Dallas to Barcelona and Philadelphia to Athens will launch on 30 March 2025. Flights from Philadelphia to Naples will start on 5 May. Finally, the carrier’s Miami-Paris route sill convert from Winter seasonal to year-round daily flights.
