What will the future of inflight connectivity look like at Anuvu? The company has long shared its expectations of a shift towards LEO constellations and the primary network, and that continues today.
In a wide-ranging conversation at APEX EXPO in Long Beach, CA last month EVP Mike Pigott shared updates on the road map to get there, and how a few of its other efforts along the way will likely shift.
The “bridge to LEO” concept depends on additional GEO capacity coming online until Telesat‘s Lightspeed is ready. And Anuvu has made no secret of its love for the Astranis microGEO approach to that challenge, riding out the delays and finally getting the hardware online. Those satellites are working well, allowing Anuvu to support Southwest’s shift to free Wi-Fi on board later this month.
But the bridge means supporting both GEO and LEO through the transition, which also means a shift in terminal equipment on board. Pigott shares the optimism of many in the industry that multiple antenna apertures on an aircraft can be reasonably supported, facilitating that transition. That also sets the company up to support a much broader range of hardware.
