Recent aircraft designs include updated entry ways, offering a more welcoming environment from the moment passengers step on board. That welcome experience may soon include an upgrade offer or co-branded partner deal displayed on an OLED screen thanks to a new partnership between LG Electronics and Lufthansa Technik. The two signed an agreement to develop such systems into a commercially viable aero offering, with work commencing in early 2019.
The new joint venture will combine LG’s advanced, lightweight and flexible OLED display technology with Lufthansa Technik’s aviation business capabilities to create new markets for on-board aircraft applications such as welcome board screens and interior linings.
“Both partners contribute a globally recognized reputation in their respective business areas to create a new flying experience for the passengers,” – Dr. Johannes Bussmann, chairman of Lufthansa Technik’s executive board.
Displaying advertisements on board is hardly a new concept. Depending on the airline nearly every surface could be considered for sale. Whether it is overhead bins and tray tables or commercials on the inflight entertainment system, airlines continue to find new channels to sell against. This represents the next step in that evolution, one that modernizes and digitizes the displays.
Unlike the static displays generally used on walls, tray tables and bins these digital displays can deliver more relevant, dynamic content. That creates a new market for the underlying systems to power them. It also presents more opportunities for airlines to discover just how much their passengers will tolerate on board. As the weight of these systems drops further and the value proposition bears out expect to see additional use cases added to the mix.
The joint venture is subject to regulatory approval.
