Air-to-ground inflight internet will come online in Kazakhstan, thanks to a newly announced partnership between SkyFive and Freedom Telecom. The deal, announced this week at Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, represents a significant expansion of the network footprint as SkyFive works to build a connectivity corridor from Europe to Asia.
Our partnership with SkyFive to introduce Air-to-Ground connectivity to Kazakhstan’s aviation sector builds on this vision, allowing us to take the inflight connectivity experience to a whole new level for both domestic and international travelers, keeping them connected seamlessly on the ground and in the sky.
– Kairat Akhmetov, CEO of Freedom Telecom
The service will be based on the SkyFive technology platform, making it compatible with systems operated elsewhere in the world. These include Viasat’s European Aviation Network (EAN) in Europe, as well as coverage in Saudi Arabia and soon in Indonesia.
The moves also build on SkyFive’s goal to build out a terrestrial service footprint that can deliver for airlines, even on international routes. Although it is harder to piece together the individual countries without the overarching regulatory position of the EU it can be done.

And when the network reaches critical mass it can be compelling for airlines, beyond domestic operations. As CEO Dirk Lindemeier explains, “Kazakhstan is important in its own right, represents a significant step toward a contiguous A2G corridor across the Eurasian supercontinent, and is a major addition to our global A2G footprint.”
