Planes connected via Viasat‘s European Aviation Network or the SkyFive Saudi Arabia network can now seamlessly roam across the two regions. The development comes as SkyFive continues to grow its air-to-ground network footprint. The implementation is similar to cell phone roaming, where the SIM card on the plane is registered on a service plan and the networks communicate with each other to validate access as the aircraft cross over to new networks.
Notably, Dirk Lindemeier, Chief Commercial Officer of Skyfive points out that the relationship is reciprocal. While no EAN-equipped planes currently operate into the Middle East flynas signed a deal earlier this year to equip its fleet with the SkyFive system, delivered via stc (the Saudi Telecom Company). Those planes do, from time to time, make their way to a handful of European destinations. And the carrier is keen to expand.
So is SkyFive, as Lindemeier shared on the sidelines of the World Aviation Festival in Amsterdam this week.
