Scratch two airports from the Southwest Airlines route map. The carrier will halt operations at Washington-Dulles and Chicago O’Hare from 4 June 2026, according to a rebooking notice posted on the company’s website Friday morning.
The carrier has served Dulles since October 2006, though the range of destinations served has always remained limited.

The Virginia operation augmented the carrier’s already sizable hub/base at BWI. It was further marginalized when Southwest gained access to DCA via new slot allocations in 2012, followed by a significant slot divestiture from the American/US Airways merger in 2014/2015. Currently Southwest operates from Dulles to Phoenix and Denver.
The O’Hare operation holds some similarities to Dulles, with a major hub on the other side of town (Midway). But Southwest also seemed to try harder on the west side of Chicago, with an initial service push in late 2021 of 800+ monthly departures.
The carrier operated to a dozen or so destinations, depending on the season, for nearly three years trying to make the market work. By mid-2024, however, it was clear the push had come up short. Departures halved by late 2024 before dropping even more at the end of 2025.
Southwest’s O’Hare service did outlast its operation at Houston’s Intercontinental Airport (again, across town from a major hub/base). They were announced at the same time; IAH service ended in 2024.
Passengers booked on flights impacted by the cancellations are eligible for rebooking to a generous range of nearby airports (ORD –> MDW/MKE/IND; IAD –> DCA/BWI/PHL/RIC) or a full refund.
