
Viasat snagged Aeromexico as an inflight connectivity customer seven years ago. Today the companies announced an expansion of that partnership. The full Aeromexico 787 fleet will be upgraded to the latest Viasat hardware, offering a consistent WiFi experience for passengers across the airline’s global footprint.

Under the newly announced deal Aeromexico will retrofit its full Dreamliner fleet – 17 aircraft – with the latest generation of Viasat hardware. The 787-8 fleet will be retrofit first, expected later this year. The 787-9s will “quickly” follow.
Viasat’s first fittings at Aeromexico were on the carrier’s 737 MAX fleet, breaking the Gogo (now Intelsat) 2Ku monopoly on that single-aisle fleet. And while some of Aeromexico’s 787-9s already fly with Viasat hardware, the company’s initial 787s were fitted with kit from Panasonic Avionics. This deal will see the PAC systems deinstalled and the existing Viasat hardware updated.
The companies also note that Aeromexico uses the Viasat Ads platform to deliver ad-supported connectivity sessions to passengers without additional costs on board. Viasat has pushed that program aggressively over the past few years, in some cases even arguing that it can fully cover the costs of delivering WiFi to passengers, making the installation net-neutral on cost for the airlines. Aeromexico offers complimentary messaging service on board today, as well as complimentary access for its business class passengers.
