
American Airlines‘ new Flagship Suite will officially take flight on 5 June 2025, connecting the carrier’s Chicago O’Hare hub to Los Angeles and London. The premium-heavy configuration includes 51 Flagship Suite seats with featuring privacy doors. It also includes 32 premium economy seats on board.
The first two 787-9 aircraft in the new configuration joined the American Airlines fleet this week, setting the stage for their entry into service later this summer.
American announced the Flagship Suite program in September 2022, part of a program to massively boost its premium capacity, while also shifting away from long-haul first class service. The widebody planes will still offer a bit of extra premium in some cases, however.

The bulkhead seats on board will be sold as Flagship Business Preferred, with extra space, plus exclusive amenities such as a mattress pad and pajamas from Nest Bedding, a throw blanket and memory foam lumbar pillow, and an upgraded amenity kit.

American’s A321XLR configuration, which will also see a Flagship Suite seat installed, will not have the premium bulkhead option. The new Collins Aerospace Aurora seat American chose for its single-aisle fleet trades the option of a premium space in the first row for increased galley cart capacity.

Collins noted this was specifically requested by its airline customers during the product development cycle.
From 6 August the new configuration will operate from Philadelphia to London, followed by Philadelphia to Zurich service from 6 August. The premium-heavy configuration will serve DFW to Brisbane in the Northern Winter season beginning 26 October.

The carrier also intends to retrofit its 777-300ER fleet with the Flagship Suite seats.
