Spirit Airlines plans to shift what counts as “comfy” on board. The carrier will adjust its recently introduced Go Comfy seating option over the next couple months, adding legroom while taking away the blocked middle seat.
Spirit’s new premium options offer travelers exceptional value, and we’re creating even more opportunities for Guests to experience them with our new extra-legroom seating option. – Rana Ghosh, Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Spirit Airlines
The primary shift will see Go Comfy extend legroom on board to 32″, up from the current 28″ configuration. This is accomplished by removing one row in front of the wing from the aircraft being converted. Seven rows are then spaced out, each getting four extra inches of space.
The net result is the same total number of passengers accommodated – the removed row is net neutral as six middle seats are unblocked on board – with 3.5x the number of premium seats available to sell. The new Go Comfy cabin will seat 42 passengers, compared to the current 12.

Initial conversions will start in June 2025 and the company expects that to mostly happen quickly. The majority of the fleet will be converted in just a couple months. The stragglers, however, will remain until 2026.
This wait creates potential confusion for passengers, but a company spokesperson downplayed those concerns: “Go Comfy product comes with more space, which includes either an extra-legroom seat or a blocked middle seat. During the transition period, the actual seat selection will depend on the aircraft operating the flight.”

The new seating layout will be available to book from 15 May for travel beginning on 9 July 2025.
Spirit also made tweaks to its Free Spirit loyalty program this week. Among them:
- Redemptions are now available for all of the product bundles, with more options promised in the months ahead.
- Free Spirit elite status members and credit card holders will be eligible for complimentary upgrades to Go Big and Go Comfy at boarding, including extending the benefit to one travel companion. Upgrades will depend on availability and status level; the company did not detail who gets what priority.
- Passengers holding the Free Spirit Travel More cobrand card (the $79 annual fee one) will get two free checked bags starting later this year. The carrier also plans to launch a cobrand debit card later this year with some earning benefits.
