De Havilland now officially offers Starlink inflight internet as an option for its Dash 8-400 family of aircraft. The Wi-Fi service can be selected via the OEM Refurbishment Program or as a retrofit solution for in-service Dash 8-400 aircraft.
The addition of Starlink on the Dash 8-400 demonstrates our commitment to continued investment in our products and to providing cutting-edge solutions for our customers.
– Ryan DeBrusk, VP Sales and Marketing, De Havilland Canada
Today’s confirmation of service availability follows a 2022 announcement that Starlink would be made available on its largest turboprops. The company anticipates an airline customer to introduce the service “in the coming weeks.”
Air Canada is expected to be that initial customer. The carrier announced plans to connect a portion of its Q400 fleet in late 2024.
Air Canada recently transitioned to a free offering to passengers on all North American and Sun destinations; long haul is coming next year. This should make compliance with Starlink’s requirement that service be free to passengers relatively seamless in terms of passenger experience on board.
The Dash 8-400 becomes the second turboprop family of aircraft to enable Starlink services on board. ATR also offers the kit to its airline operators. Air New Zealand announced plans to trial the solution in December 2023. EASA certified the installation in January 2025.
