Arguably the most premium routes for United Airlines are finally receiving the inflight wifi upgrade they need and deserve. As part of a previously announced order the premium-heavy configuration 757-200 fleet will see the Viasat Ka-band kit installed, replacing the Gogo ATG4 service. The first such conversion completed earlier this year and returned to service on 22 March.
The airline had previously announced a possible trial of the Gogo GTO or 2Ku services on the “p.s.” fleet but that work never materialized. In February 2018 United and Viasat announced a deal to fit the new 737 MAX fleet with the Viasat solution marking the first plane from the carrier to be fitted directly by Viasat rather than with Thales as the integrator. That deal covered “more than 70 aircraft, including at least 58 of United’s new Boeing 737MAX aircraft.” The balance of that subset will be this 757 (f/k/a “p.s.”) fleet. In addition to completing the first retrofit the company recently updated its inflight services webpage to include the new designation.

The work will remove the Gogo ATG product from United’s mainline fleet. The regional jet fleet will continue to fly with the ATG solution.
