Malaysia Airlines plans to update the in-flight entertainment (IFE) experience on its 737-800 fleet. The airline will launch a new streaming IFE solution on board, based on Moment’s Flymingo Connect platform. The effort serves dual goals of improving passenger comfort while also delivering improved ancillary revenue opportunities through the inflight entertainment platform.

Moment is scheduled to roll out pilot tests on the new IFE portal starting in January 2022 on selected aircraft of Malaysia Airlines’ B737-800 fleet. Upon successful trials, Malaysia Airlines will subsequently deploy this throughout its entire B737-800 fleet, offering streaming entertainment, real-time travel information, and a compelling and seamless e-commerce platform.
The modular Flymingo solution consists of on-board servers and wireless access points mounted in the aircraft. It is a more permanent solution than the many portable, streaming IFE offerings on the market. But the company also believes that brings greater functionality and flexibility its airline customers.
Malaysia Airlines’ Chief Marketing and Customer Experience officer Lay Yin May notes the IFE upgrade is “part of a more extensive cabin refurbishment program that the airline has undertaken to ensure we deliver a seamless and highly customized travel experience for our passengers, especially in a post-pandemic era.”
Among additional features to be added with the new system, May expects passengers to be able to vote for future IFE content selections, continue viewing a program seamlessly across connecting flights, and interact with their Enrich frequent flyer program account via the Flymingo system.
It is worth noting that these aircraft currently have embedded IFE screens powered by Panasonic Avionics’ platform. How the Flymingo platform interacts with that system as part of the “more extensive cabin refurbishment” May promises remains to be seen.
