Passengers have new and different expectations for services and amenities on board. Inflight products supplier Kaelis Group hopes to help airlines address that challenge with the launch of its new Self-Protective Pocket Pouch (SP3) offering.
The global outbreak of COVID-19 has put the world on hold for several weeks now. As time moves forward, a light is shining through and we can see life outside the quarantine. We are aware that once the travel industry starts operating again, new rules will apply in order to assure crew and travelers’ safety.
The kits are customizable, inside and out. The default version includes the most important personal protective equipment (PPE) components:
- Alcohol-based wipes
- Hand sanitizer
- A pair of gloves
- A mask
It can also be fitted with an informational leaflet and other PPE options from the Kaelis stocks. The pouch can be customized to airline branding standards. And for those carriers with an eye towards a more sustainable future, eco-friendly, biodegradable and washable pouches are available.
Will these kits address the challenges around sanitation on board and lead to a safer travel experience? IATA is concerned about the process for resumption of travel, for example, but also expects that more stringent controls or testing protocols from governments are the key, not necessarily individual passengers changing behavior dramatically. And IATA’s Director General Alexandre de Juniac reiterated this morning that the group will follow advice of medical experts with respect to aircraft and passenger efforts, hoping for at least regional if not global agreement on what steps to take. But it will not unilaterally mandate a cleaning regimen or use of gloves/masks on board.
That approach accounts for the fact that air on the planes is generally better filtered and processed than in other phases of the air travel experience. Addressing crowding in terminals or contagion through security checkpoint shared equipment are far greater challenges and risk points for the industry and travelers.
All of which is to say that things like the SP3 kit present a great image from the airlines to passengers. But they are not going to be the solution to the COVID-19 challenges.
