One lucky 737 MAX 8 BBJ customer will soon be flying with the newest triband connectivity radome available in the business aviation market. Lufthansa Technik announced a deal with with the unnamed operator at the EBACE event in Geneva this week.
The TIOS+ (Three-In-One-Solution) solution offers a tail-mount radome supporting L-band, Ku-band and Ka-band connectivity options. It is a home grown evolution of the TIOS (Two-In-One-Solution) offering that the group began installing on the 737NG BBJ family of aircraft two decades ago.
It is also one of several home grown solutions the company hopes to sell more of in the coming years. LHT operates its own composite material design and manufacturing facility from its Hamburg site, allowing for custom radome builds, along with other airframe-related components.
The push towards developing its own products rather than serving solely as an integrator for other vendors is a significant focus for the Technik group. A recent reorganization launched four “product houses” within the Technik group, allowing the company to “no longer offer only our services, our knowledge, our capabilities,” but to also deliver specific products to customers according to Jan-Peter Gaense, Head of Passenger Experience Products & Solutions. This shift leverages the significant investments Lufthansa Technik previously made in the core infrastructure of delivering aircraft modifications and services to market. These developments come from this “Original Equipment Innovation” group within Technik.
Making better use of those in-house skills and systems is good news for company profits but also should be beneficial to the aviation market as a whole. Innovation comes from many different places and Technik is keen to show off in that capacity.
