Southwest clears first ETOPS check in Hawaii plans

3 January 2019 By Seth Miller 1 Comment

Southwest Airlines is inching closer to approval for service to Hawaii. But don’t start planning a trip just yet. The carrier still needs to pass a few more hurdles before it can schedule service.

DC airports get political, fight expansion

26 April 2018 By Seth Miller 6 Comments

When politics are tightly intertwined in the operations of airports then perhaps it should not be surprising when the airport operators get political. In Washington, DC that takes the form of objecting to a proposed exemption to the perimeter rule at Reagan National (DCA). But does the logic hold up??

Getting Giddy about Gogo GTO

29 May 2015 By Seth Miller Leave a Comment

Gogo took a big step towards introducing its new high-speed GTO and 2Ku satellite services this week. Passengers will (relatively) soon see a big jump in the bandwidth available on board.

JetBlue’s FlyFi Set to Remain Free

13 April 2015 By Seth Miller 1 Comment

The fastest internet in the sky will remain free for customers as JetBlue re-ups its commitment to keep its FlyFi product fee-free. Alas, the fitting of the smaller E190 planes is delayed a bit, but still expected to complete within a year.

Has United’s Panasonic-based in-flight internet service gone live??

9 December 2012 By Seth Miller 3 Comments

The fact that a few United Airlines Airbus A319 aircraft have the Panasonic in-flight internet kit installed is not much of a secret. The carrier has been reasonably open about the fact that the type is getting the gear installed these days. But there haven’t been any more details released. No word on exactly when the […]

Continental announces in-flight WiFi plans. Again.

22 March 2011 By Seth Miller 3 Comments

When Continental Airlines announced their deal with LiveTV to provide in-flight television service a couple years ago there was an additional piece to the deal. LiveTV was also supposed to provide in-flight internet service via their Kiteline product. It was going to be lighter (i.e. cheaper) for the airlines and cheaper for passengers, offering basic […]

Row44 finally flying

26 February 2009 By Seth Miller 4 Comments

The battles between in-flight internet service providers are rather entertaining.  The two main players, Row44 and Aircell (provider of the gogo service) are after each other like a couple of rival kids on the playground, constantly asserting themselves as the better option and working behind the scenes through lawsuits to scuttle the other.  But beyond […]
