OneWeb secures antenna, investment with Hanwha Systems

20 August 2021 By Seth Miller Leave a Comment

Each of OneWeb’s post-bankruptcy investors plays a strategic role in the company’s future. Last week’s news of a new partner keeps that streak alive, as Korea’s Hanwha Systems added $300 million to the company’s coffers.

Perhaps more importantly, however, Hanwha can provide a critical component of the company’s technical roadmap. Expect to see electronically steered antenna (ESA) solutions delivered from Hanwha to power the OneWeb customer terminals.

The Inmarsat Orchestra logo

What if satellites alone are not the best solution to mobile connectivity demand? Under its newly announced Orchestra initiative, Inmarsat wants to take a different tack. The company plans to layer multiple communications technologies, adding terrestrial services and LEO satellites to the existing GEO satellite footprint. Traffic will route via the best available network at any given time.

This story is about: 5G, air-to-ground, ATG-NG, GEO, Geosynchronous Earth Orbit, IFC, IFEC, in-flight connectivity, in-flight internet, inflight connectivity, Inmarsat, Ka, Ka-band, LEO, Low Earth Orbit, Orchestra, Satellite, wifi Filed Under: IFEC

PaxEx Premium: Peeling back the layers

29 July 2021 By Seth Miller 1 Comment

How does a major satellite connectivity company solve the problem of congestion at crowded (air)ports without disrupting billions of dollars in existing infrastructure? It is an answer that, much like the network (and ogres), comes with lots of layers.

This story is about: 5G, air-to-ground, ATG-NG, GEO, Geosynchronous Earth Orbit, Global Xpress, GX, GX Aviation, in flight, in-flight connectivity, in-flight internet, inflight connectivity, Inmarsat, Ka, Ka-band, L-band, LEO, Low Earth Orbit, Orchestra, Satellite, wifi Filed Under: IFEC, PremCat

A rendering of the Telesat Lightspeed LEO constellation

It should come as no surprise that a trio of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite operators believe more than 90% of in-flight connectivity traffic will pass over their networks in a decade’s time. Still, hearing how SpaceX, OneWeb and Telesat believe their upcoming constellations will compete for traffic during this week’s Connected Aviation Intelligence Summit reveals slightly different takes on the market and what they believe will be necessary to secure customers going forward.
