From 2Ku to 2Ka: Gogo ready for a spectrum shift

21 May 2020 By Seth Miller Leave a Comment

What keeps airlines from shifting from one inflight connectivity solution to another? Contracts are certainly part of it, but so is the significant cost to update and replace hardware on the planes. Gogo has a plan that could ease such pain while keeping airlines active on its services.

This story is about: 2Ka, 2Ku, gogo, IFC, IFEC, in flight, in-flight connectivity, in-flight internet, inflight connectivity, Ka, Ka-band, Ka2517, Ku, Ku-band, KuKa, Oakleigh Thorne, PaxEx, wifi Filed Under: IFEC, PremCat

ThinKom touts low-drag advantages in push for regional jet connectivity

23 January 2020 By Seth Miller 3 Comments

The Thinkom ThinAir 2517 Ka-band antenna system is in the STC process for an A320-family customer. PaxEx.Aero believes this might be for the new Spirit Airlines/Thales FlytLIVE project.

Getting high-speed satellite-based internet service on to regional jets has proven an uphill battle to date. Antenna manufacturer ThinKom hopes its Ka2517 solution can help. The company released details of a study this week confirming its antenna can fly on smaller fuselages without dramatically increasing drag.

This story is about: 2Ka, 2Ku, air-to-ground, ATG, ATG-NG, Deutsche Telekom, EAN, European Aviation Network, gogo, IFC, IFEC, in flight, in-flight connectivity, in-flight internet, Inmarsat, IPTV, Ka, Ka-band, Ka2517, Ku, Ku-band, live television, regional jet, Satellite, SmartSky, SmartSky LTE, ThinKom, wifi Filed Under: IFEC

Eutelsat KONNECT successfully launched

20 January 2020 By Seth Miller Leave a Comment

More Ka-band capacity should be online soon. Eutelsat’s KONNECT satellite successfuly launched last week and is now raising to its geostationary orbit location to serve Europe and North Africa. ANd that could be good news for Viasat as well.

Spirit Airlines' first A321 with the Thales wifi kit installed. And the older generation radome.

More troubles for the Spirit Airlines inflight wifi program came to light today. Antenna issues with the Thales FlytLIVE kit will require the few existing installations to be replaced and tested anew before the full fleet deployment resumes.

Putting AirAsia’s new GX WiFi to the test

9 December 2019 By Seth Miller Leave a Comment

Deploy quickly and work out the bugs along the way. That’s not a typical approach to anything in the aviation world, and for good reason. But for AirAsia’s GX Aviation WiFi deployment that’s the plan, even if it means some hiccups along the way, as were experienced during a recent demonstration flight.

This story is about: AirAsia, AirAsia WiFi, ancillary, ancillary fees, ancillary revenue, FTEAsia19, GX, GX Aviation, IFC, IFE, IFEC, in flight, in-flight connectivity, in-flight entertainment, in-flight internet, inflight connectivity, inflight entertainment, Inmarsat, Ka, Ka-band, ROKKI, SwiftBroadBand Filed Under: IFEC, Product Reviews
