Inmarsat moving EAN to Luxembourg amidst Brexit concerns

14 January 2019 By Seth Miller Leave a Comment

A critical component of Inmarsat’s European Aviation Network (EAN) is the grant of S-band spectrum from European regulators. Rather than risking the operation with Brexit the group will rehome the EAN subsidiary to Luxembourg.

This story is about: Brexit, British Airways, EAN, European Aviation Network, Eutelsat, IAG, IFC, IFEC, in flight, in-flight connectivity, in-flight internet, inflight connectivity, Inmarsat, International Airline Group, lawsuit, Luxembourg, S-Band, ViaSat, wifi Filed Under: IFEC

Shipping ATG out to sea

26 November 2018 By Seth Miller Leave a Comment

The Inmarsat EAN antenna is tiny. That's great news for airlines considering the solution (though the system uses a few of these, not just one)

Air-to-ground connectivity networks do not work over water. The word ground is right there in the name. Not ocean, not sea. Ground. And yet, Deutsche Telekom has its eyes on changing the rules of ATG networking, bringing the technology to some overwater flights to further support Inmarsat’s European Aviation Network (EAN) operations. The idea might not be as crazy as it sounds.

22 October 2018 By Seth Miller

How does an airline go about comparing the inflight wifi connectivity options available on the 787 Dreamliner? Lots of contract details about pricing and delivery timeframes are certainly critical, but occasionally the data is summed up into two slides in a briefing deck. For Italian charter operator NEOS the contest settled between Viasat and Panasonic Avionics back in 2017. It appears the carrier chose neither vendor, but the summary of the positioning from the two finalists is intriguing.
