Updated inflight internet systems are coming to Air Canada‘s 737 MAX and regional jets. The carrier will expand its partnership with Intelsat to install 2Ku on the MAX fleet while the ERJ-175 and CRJ900 types operating for Jazz will see Intelsat’s multi-orbit ESA from Stelalr Blu installed. In total, approximately 100 planes will see Intelsat’s systems installed in the years ahead.
We’re confident Intelsat provides proven technology, an extensible platform and network, and the right vision for the future of in-flight connectivity
– Mark Nasr, Air Canada’s Executive Vice President, Marketing and Digital, and President of Aeroplan
Selection of the Intelsat multi-orbit solution has long been expected, especially following myriad open hints of the deal during Aircraft Interiors Expo 2023 in Hamburg earlier this summer. It is the same solution selected by Alaska Airlines earlier this year.
The deal displaces the legacy air-to-ground hardware from the Jazz fleet. For the MAX aircraft the 2Ku install brings service on board for the first time. Those planes initially were contracted for service from Thales Inflyt but the system was never fully activated.
The news also builds on Air Canada’s announcement earlier this year that it would expand its live television offering and complimentary messaging tier service for customers across its operations. The older ATG systems do not support that level of service.
