Welcome to the PaxEx update for October 25, 2019, coming to you from on board one of the first United Airlines CRJ550 aircraft. The fleet launches this weekend with ten planes, growing to more than 50 next year and bringing more first class seats to some of the smaller cities United serves.
Airbus picked up a couple bits of good news with week as Spirit Airlines indicated its intentions to by 100 more A320neo family planes, while Delta Air Lines added a pair of extra A330neo frames to its fleet plan. On the other side of the Atlantic Boeing confirmed delays of 777X deliveries into 2021 and indicated that it will slow production of the 787, with the US-China trade war a significant factor.
New certifications from Viasat and Gogo should help get more business jets online, while SES, Thales, Thinkom and Hughes partnered to demonstrate an inflight connectivity solution spanning geosynchronous and middle earth orbits. It is a significant step forward in delivering more bandwidth to more aircraft with lower latency and maybe, if we’re lucky, lower costs.
Finally, on the airport front Doha’s Hamad International Airport will see a significant expansion, including an indoor tropical garden and water feature reminiscent of Singapore’s Changi, while JetBlue got creative with bag fees, hoping to reduce the overhead bin crunch while not fully giving up the lucrative ancillary revenue that checked bags generate.
Keep up with these stories and more all week long at PaxEx.Aero and have a great trip!
