Trans States Airlines will halt operations on 1 April 2020. The carrier, which provides regional jet capacity to United Airlines, will halt operations as the parent carrier slashes flights. The news was shared with employees in a memo this afternoon as the COVID-19 coronavirus continues to depress demand for travel and other services. And yet the news is not quite as jarring as perhaps it could be.
It’s difficult to articulate or even comprehend the speed at which the coronavirus has changed our industry and our world… We knew that the wind down would be accelerated, but were confident that we could continue to fly for United for some months. Yet now, less than one month after our original announcement, we now have less than two weeks of flying remaining. It hardly seems possible.– Rick Leach in a memo to all employees
The carrier was already headed to its end. Last month United announced plans to consolidate its Embraer E145 fleet and Trans States Airlines would be eliminated from that contract. In that context the company was already dead in some ways. But it expected an orderly transition and wind-down of services, with the opportunity to transition pilots to other roles. Instead things will wrap rapidly, halting just two weeks hence.
Instead, it is one of the first to halt operations completely as the industry tries to find what the stable level of operations will be in the near term and just how long it will take to bottom out and return to growth.
What will the bailout look like?
In the interim, the pleas for bailout money are coming in quickly. The US carriers are hoping for at least $60 billion in grants, zero-interest loans and waived taxes. Airports are seeking another $10 billion. Boeing is looking for some cash, too. More demands will be heard from other parties, though how they are answered remains to be seen.
While the President is openly supportive of the aviation industry’s requests there are also some objections, or at least parties hoping to prevent this from becoming a purely corporate spending spree. Union leaders are calling for an increased focus on workers.
Passenger advocates (and passengers in general) want to see fewer (or at least more rational) fees and better service standards on board. Environmental advocates want to see stronger standards enacted around fuel efficiency, with investment in the new technologies to deliver those gains.
And at least a few politicians are making strong claims to support this approach.
The ultimate pay out, however, remains to be seen.
